About Us

The Children’s Book Bank is a charitable organization designed to support children’s literacy by providing free books and literacy support to children in lower income neighbourhoods.

The Children’s Book Bank is located at 350 Berkeley Street in Toronto, and offers a range of gently used and new books secured through donation, school and community book drives. Staffed by volunteers and working within the community, we focus on the literacy needs of children, from infants through to age 12, and work to support their interest in, and success with, reading. In addition to providing books, The Children’s Book Bank offers literacy support and programming.

A visit to The Children’s Book Bank is much like a visit to a familiar and well-loved children’s book store. The space is safe, warm and inviting and creates a wonderful oasis for the children; it is a place where they can relax and experience the magic of books and enjoy reading.

  2. I am teaching a grade 2-3 class on the Dewey decimal system. I was wondering how books are organized at the book bank?

    • Hello,
The Book Bank doesn’t use the Dewey Decimal system like a library does. We divide our books into one of these categories and then make sure that they are placed on the same bookcase every time so that our visitors can easily find them:
      -board books
-concept books (ABC, 123, shapes, colours, opposites)
      -easy readers
      -early series (fiction)
      -intermediate series (fiction)
      -senior series (fiction)
      -non-series fiction
      -graphic novels
-non-fiction shelves: hobbies, sports, Canada, Science, History, Animals, Biography
      -Picture books (soft cover)
      -Picture books (hard cover)
      -Poetry
-picture books with popular characters (Clifford, Arthur, TV/movie characters, etc.)

Our volunteers are always at the ready to help a visitor find a book in the storefront.

      Hope this helps!

How does one donate books to the CBB? I have many picture books (both soft and hardcover) in excellent condition and would love to give them a forever home with a child who would love them.
